A chance encounter with a loom changed the life of science
graduate, Neeru Kumar. So fas-cinated was she by the process of working on the
loom that she decided on the divergent course her life was to take from there.
She enrolled at N.I.D. The year was 1980.

HANDICRAFTS WITHOUT BORDERS

Neeru Kumar was accepted into The NID in 1974. For the first eighteen months, every student was required to dedicate themselves to general principles of industrial design and visual communication.After that, Neeru concentrated on designing fabrics.This meant an introduction to traditional Indian weaves, printing techniques, color theory, weaving on looms, and experimenting with the different possibilities of materials such as cotton, silk, wool, jute, etc.

Kumar's success story is inspiring. In line with
her aesthetic, she supplies both fabricand clothes to British stores such as Liberty, Har-vey Nichols', Bon Marche and Selfridges as well as stores in France and Japan. "I've sold all over the world, but Paris is my territory. I sell most of my work there," she modestly adds.

The splendid artisanal silks created by Neeru Kumar, offered in the two Tulsi stores, one in Santushti Complex and the other, larger, recently opened in Hauz Khas.Β They are fabrics with large ecru and black weaves of tribal inspiration, splendid silk scarves, raw silk waistcoats, stoles, carpets, rope and wicker panels, and collectibles: like ancient saris and carefully restored fabrics, stitch by stitch.
